. I am fully committed to the important initiatives that we have put in place and will work every day to keep the people of Brooklyn safe,” said Gonzalez in receiving the award.

Gonzalez recounted how he grew up in East New York and Williamsburg, and attended John Dewey High School in Coney Island.  He also explained how he spent his professional life fighting for justice having started as an assistant district attorney in the Kings County District Attorney’s Office in 1995 straight out of law school.
The party and the Bridge MP is the brainchild of Mark Meyer Appel, a lifelong Brooklynite whose message of bridging cultures was also on display at the party. The evening’s crowd was a good mix of religious and non-religious Jews and Muslims as well as Blacks and Asians, whom all mingled, ate Kosher and Halal food, danced and listened to the cracker jack four-piece band featuring international singing sensation Neshama.

Appel is also a friend of for a number of elected officials , and provides the Bridge space free of charge for a number of good causes such as blood drives, and political town halls and educational forums. As such there were a number of elected officials in attendance at the party including City Council Members Mathieu Eugene and Jumaane Williams, and Assemblywoman Rodneyse Bichotte.
But Appel, a strong supporter of Israel, is particularly involved in fighting child abuse with a strong emphasis on child molestation in the Orthodox Jewish neighborhoods from which he originally came. As such, he was a major supporter of Thompson and strongly believes Gonzalez will carry on Thompson’s legacy of fighting for social justice in all forms.
“I think Eric is a special person that can unify Brooklyn. He has on the job experience being in the district attorney’s office for many years as a prosecutor. He’s also accessible, kind and comes from, and understands the community,” sais Appel.
I am fully committed to the important initiatives that we have put in place and will work every day to keep the people of Brooklyn safe,” said Gonzalez in receiving the award.

ca.
Sex abuse victims and child advocates turned up the heat Monday on Gov. Cuomo, calling on him to support legislation that would extend the statute of limitations for criminal charges and civil suits lodged against accused abusers.
For years, Joel Engelman, who was allegedly abused by a yeshiva principal, said he has lobbied Albany lawmakers to extend the statute — saying that school administrators can’t be trusted to do the right thing.
“The governor needs to take a stronger and more public stance on this issue,” said Engelman, 30. “The silence is deafening. The governor is pretty much saying he’s not interested in this bill passing.”
Cuomo said he was willing to consider some type of change to the law, but he did not elaborate.

“Those guilty of sexual abuse need to be held accountable, and we would support changes to help ensure victims have their day in court and maintain due process,” said Cuomo’s spokesman Richard Azzopardi.
But he stopped short of outright supporting a proposed bill — sponsored by Assemblywoman Margaret Markey (D-Queens) and last passed by the Assembly in 2008 — that would extend the statute of limitations, a measure opposed by the Catholic Church and a consortium of yeshivas.
That has upset at least one Jewish child advocate. “The governor has to address this problem immediately. He’s part of the problem,” said Mark Meyer Appel, founder of Voice of Justice.
Engelman, who says he was abused when he was 8, just wanted the Williamsburg, Brooklyn, yeshiva he attended to fire his accused abuser, Rabbi Avrohom Reichman.

MARTIN LUTHER KING JR DAY,,,,,, THE FIGHT FOR JUSTICE MUST NEVER STOP

Monday Janurary 18 2016 will mark the 30th annual observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.
To a generation of Americans, the third Monday in January has been a holiday for as long as they have been alive.
But for those in the front lines of the Civil Rights Movement, the holiday was a hard-won
When a bill for the holiday was first introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives in 1979, it was voted down.in.
The holiday was observed for the first time on Jan. 20, 1986, and it was the culmination of a 15-year effort. John Conyers, Democrat from Michigan, first introduced legislation for a commemorative holiday four days after King was assassinated in 1968.
“Dr. King sought rights and freedoms beyond the African American community, for women, for all people of color, and for the disenfranchised,. “His nonviolent approach was his way to pursue peace. He truly was a great American with a place in history, deserving our honor
